Première-Chute Dam:
Web site: Centrale de la Première-Chute
Centres de téléconduite et de formation

The last dam down Rivière-des-Quinze river is a hydro-electric plant situated near the town of Notre-Dame-du-Nord, on the way to Nédélec on road 101. Guided visits of 1 1/2 hour are available.

The construction of the plant allowed to try, for the first time in North America, some techniques wich have become common today. Cast walls, used for waterproofing the foundations of a dam, are an example.

The three gates of the dam are another example : they are section-gates. Unlike conventional gates operating like a guillotine, section-gates are built on axles, which allows the gate to revolve up and down to open or close the water flow. This type of equipment can't be found anywhere else in Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Some engineers contemplate to use this type of gate for future designs of dams.

The Première-Chute dam is situated in the old river bed. It is linked to the two shores by counterweight-dams. Three turbines were installed in 1968, and another in 1975. Completely automatic, the plant is controlled from the Centre de téléconduite régional (control centre) in Rouyn-Noranda.

Marina Tête du Lac:

Managed by the Témis Nautical Club of Notre-Dame-du-Nord, the Marina Tête-du-Lac is a full service marina offering fuel, dump, deck location, electricity and water.

The Lake Timiskaming (Algonkin name meaning "Deep waters") is a very imposing lake with its 124 km of lenght and its depth averaging 300 to 400 feet, and reaching 700 feet in some places. In the Notre-Dame-du-Nord area, the depth is much less and a well marked channel (20 feet deep) shows the way for boating.

The Timiskaming and Ottawa River Waterway is an impressing network of bypasses around dams and rapids on Ottawa river and Lake Timiskaming . Boaters can now sail from Notre-Dame-du-Nord (Qc) and New-Liskeard (On) all the way to Arnprior (On) 468 km down.

By navigating down the Waterway on these magnificient and history laden waters, you can use marinas with a broad range of services all along the way. Comfortable and friendly quality lodging and restaurants, shopping and much more, is available on both the Québec and Ontario sides. During the boating season, you can participate in a variety of activities and visit numerous attractions in the riverside towns and cities.
